Northern Cape South Africa The Northern Cape is a land of many different cultures, frontier history and brave missionaries. It also has countless challenges for hikers, hunters and 4x4 adventurers wanting to experience something new. It has impressive game parks with endless wildlife and one of the most unique flora in the world. |
The Diamond centre of Kimberley is the commercial heart of a province
that runs up to the borders of Namibia and Botswana. This is an area
not visited by many first time travellers to South Africa, but an area
crossed
by
both Rovos Rail and the Blue Train as they travel from Pretoria to
Cape Town and reverse. The most famous town of course is Kimberley,
the centre
of the diamond mining industry in South Africa and famous for the creation
of the Big Hole, the scar left by the early diamond miners. The province is famous for its spring wild flower displays in August and September, whilst the very Northern Cape witnessed some of the bloodiest battles of the Anglo Boer War, particularly at Paardeberg. Things not to miss in the Northern Cape: 1. The Roaring Sands – dunes in the Witsand Nature Reserve that groan when you walk over them. 2. The Big Hole – the scar left in the diamond fields at Kimberley from the diggings of the early miners and the associated mining museum. 3. The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, a pristine ecosystem where rust red sand dunes, dry riverbeds and sparse vegetation offer sanctuary to a wide variety of mammals, reptiles and birds.
