KwaZulu Fly Drive Itinerary
Day 1 Your first taste of Africa
Most flights leave the UK in the early evening and travel through the night to arrive into Johannesburg early the following morning.
Day 2 Welcome to Africa
You will be met at Johannesburg Airport by our personal Meet & Greet service and a transfer arranged to your hotel in either Johannesburg or Pretoria. The area has much to offer and we will discuss the options for the remainder of the day.
Day 3 Discover the Drakensberg
Your car will be delivered to your hotel this morning and you will set out to discover the Drakensberg Mountains, the largest mountain range in South Africa. A collection of mountain ranges, small lakes, breathtaking views and interspersed with some of the most fertile and productive land in the whole of Africa. It is not surprising that the food is the feature of many hotels in this area. If you enjoy fishing, wildlife viewing (not the big cats), birding, great walking and climbing, this area is a definite must. Overnight in the central Drakensberg area.
Day 4 The Midlands Meander
Within this area there is a beautiful day drive known as the Midlands Meander. This allows clients to drive slowly through the area taking in some of the unique sights and historical markers. Return this evening to your hotel in this most scenic area.
Day 5 Rorke’s Drift
A short drive away are some of the most famous battlefield sites of the Zulu Wars. Rorke’s Drift is an emotive visit and also the site of the highest number of VC’s awarded in one battle. Your comfortable lodge in this area, set amongst magnificent scenery, will form your base for the next two days. The visit to Rorke’s Drift is normally done late afternoon to coincide with the timing of the battle and making the whole experience more realistic.
Day 6 Isandlwana
The site of what many acknowledge to be the biggest defeat of the British Army in Africa, which preceded Rorke’s Drift by 24 hours. A short drive away takes you to an open plain dominated by a mountain peak, from this peak your guide will vividly describe what happened in the period leading up to and during the battle. Certainly an emotional experience, which helps to illustrate what a great nation the Zulu people really are.
Day 7 KwaZulu Natal Coast / The Dolphin Coast
A short drive away is the stunning coastal area north of Durban. The farther north you go the more deserted the beaches become. There are some superb beach resorts in this area and on some of the more deserted beaches the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. This part of the trip can be expanded to fit your individual schedule. Overnight on the coast.
Other things to do in the area
We can also arrange for you to fly back from Richard’s Bay or Durban, saving the long drive back to Johannesburg, at a very reasonable price. If you are looking for a trip with historic interest, outstanding scenery, great food and great beaches this area of South Africa will not disappoint.
