Northern Cape

The Diamond centre of Kimberley is the commercial heart of a province that runs up to the borders of Namibia and Botswana. This is an semi-desert area not often visited, but traversed by both Rovos Rail and the Blue Train as they travel from Pretoria to Cape Town and reverse. Kimberley is the centre of the diamond mining industry in South Africa and famous for the creation of the Big Hole, the scar left by the early diamond miners.

The Northern Cape is a place of vast, arid plains, spectacular scenery and big sky. It is mostly desert or semi-desert but it has plenty to offer. It is home to one of the world’s most spectacular natural floral displays: each year during August and September, the area of Namaqualand is transformed into a vibrant carpet of colour by millions of blooming wildflowers. The Wonderwerk (Miracle) Cave, near Kuruman, is the site of excavations that provide evidence of earliest humankind. Two-million-year old stone tools were excavated in 2008.

This is Africa, so of course there are game-viewing opportunities! Probably the best is the 3.6 million-hectare Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park – which comprises two adjoining national parks: the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. Here you might be lucky enough to see the famous black-maned lion as well as cheetah, leopard and birds of prey. At the Augrabies Falls National Park, you should see the rare black rhino as well as the tiny rock hyrax whose closest living relative is the elephant.

Historians might like to visit the site of Paardeberg where after a very major battle in February 1900 over 4000 men (nearly 10% of the Boer Army) surrendered.
