Western Cape

The Western Cape is home to Cape Town, the vast Cape Winelands and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Robben Island and the Cape Floral region.

Aside from Cape Town and the Kruger, the area most people want to see in South Africa is the famed Garden Route which traverses the southern coast of the Western Cape. The Garden Route stretches from Cape Town east to Port Elizabeth. But there is more than the Garden Route to the Western Cape. Here you will find renowned vineyards and excellent restaurants, especially around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, the rugged mountains of Cederberg covered in flowers in October and November.

The Western Cape’s beaches are beautiful, some with mountains rushing down to meet a turquoise ocean. Don’t miss Hermanus where any time from June to December you can expect to see the enormous southern right whales from the shore, boat or light aircraft or Knysna famous not only for its glorious scenery but its oysters. There is an annual oyster festival in July. Mossel Bay has superb beaches and is one of the centres where you can cage dive with great white sharks.

However, the Western Cape is not just about the coast. Inland, you will find the glorious Little Karoo, the Swartberg mountains, ostrich farms, curious meerkats and the spectacular Cango Caves.

If you would like a holiday in this area, we would suggest a circle fly-drive starting in Cape Town and travelling along the south coast as far as Plettenberg. From there you would strike north through the mountains to Oudtshoorn and back along route 62 through the wine district. A superb two-week holiday which could incorporate a mini-safari.
